She may be reached at Ruthanne.hogan@unlv.edu  or 702-895-0517. Financial assistance may also be available through Workforce Connections under their Workforce Investment Act (WIA). Can I pay a deposit to register for a certificate program and then make payments to pay off the program tuition? Are there payment plan options for these certificate programs?

Unfortunately we do not have any payment plan options for our courses and programs in this department.  100% of the registration fee is due at the time of registration except for travel programs which have different deadlines for fee payments.

Do you provide job placement services once I complete my certificate program?

No, we currently do not have any job placement services to assist you in finding a job once you complete a certificate program. However, some of our instructors who teach in these programs are contacted by industry network professionals about available job opportunities and they do share these opportunities with students in their courses and programs.

Will I receive grades in my classes and on my transcript?

For professional development courses and programs, our standard grading system is pass or fail. If you need letter grades for a professional development course, please let your instructor know on the first day of class. When final rosters and grades are posted, your student record and transcript will include pass/fail grades or, if requested, letter grades.

Can my CSN or other college credits transfer into my certificate here at UNLV?

No, academic credits from other institutions will not transfer into our certificate programs. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) have to be earned here at UNLV to be applied towards any certificate requirements.

Can I complete the program if I haven’t taken a course in a few years?

Yes, there is no timeline or deadline date to complete the program. CEUs earned do not expire and can be used towards certificate completion.

Is the program American Bar Association (ABA) approved?
This program is not ABA "approved," as we feel there is no real advantage to our students by seeking ABA endorsement. As it stands now, our program meets the guidelines of the ABA with the exception of an externship requirement at the end of the studies portion. The added costs of an ABA endorsement would be passed onto our students who are already paying significant program costs, plus the time involved in completing an externship would delay our students’ entrance into the job market.
We are informed that the vast majority of employers are not requiring ABA approval, and those that do have hired our graduates anyway, effectively waiving that condition.

Can I be a paralegal in California with the certificate received in Nevada?
According to the California paralegal certification requirements: California legislation (AB 1761) makes it unlawful for persons to identify themselves as paralegals unless they possess one of the following requirements:
1. A certificate of completion from a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association.
2. A certificate of completion from a paralegal program at, or a degree from, a postsecondary institution that requires the successful completion of a minimum of 24 semester, or equivalent, units in law-related courses and that has been accredited by a national or regional accrediting organization or approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education.

UNLV’s paralegal program meets the second requirement.
