English as a Second Language (ESL)

A strong command of English can help you thrive in business, academics, and every day life. UNLV offers a variety of different English as a Second Language (ESL) courses to fit your skill level and help you progress from non-speaker to full fluency. All courses cover the core ESL content areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Courses are assessed in a pass/fail format.

You will need to take an ACCUPLACER placement test prior to registering for any ESL course other than Beginner. Register for the ACCUPLACER test online or call 702-895-3394 for phone registration. If you have taken the ACCUPLACER tests at another institution or you have other documentation to prove proficiency, please provide the documentation to ce-assistant@unlv.edu no later than one week prior to the course start.

Students who took ESL courses through our department between January 2018 – August 2018 and successfully passed the course(s) are exempt from the proficiency exam requirements and can enter into the next level course (i.e. if someone took ESL Beginning they can take ESL Intermediate but they cannot skip to ESL Advanced without an ACCUPLACER test). Anyone completing courses prior to 2017 must take the proficiency testing and be placed in the course equivalent.
