Graphic Design classes
UNLV’s Continuing Education Graphic Design Certificate Program has provided countless students with the skills, confidence, and career-readiness they need to succeed in the ever-evolving design industry. Adobe Certified Educator Jessica Kennedy is a key reason why the program continues to excel with the ever-changing landscape.
“Teaching at UNLV has been the best job I’ve ever had,” Kennedy said. “I love working with adults who are motivated, eager to learn, and truly engaged in the process. It makes for a great classroom experience.”
Jessica has been a part of the Las Vegas community for over 25 years. Her journey into teaching at UNLV Continuing Education began when she was invited to develop a graphic design curriculum over 15 years ago. Since then, she has been a dedicated educator, helping students hone their creative skills and develop industry-relevant expertise.
Kennedy primarily teaches courses in Adobe Illustrator, including both Level 1 and Level 2, Adobe Photoshop, focusing on advanced photo manipulation techniques, and Adobe InDesign, which is essential for creating layouts for magazines, books, and other print materials. The program’s flexibility and depth allow students to develop a strong foundation in multiple aspects of graphic design, ensuring they are well-prepared for professional opportunities.
The decision to teach at UNLV Continuing Education was simple: she enjoys working with adult learners who have clear goals and strong motivation.
“Adults tend to engage more, especially in an online environment,” she noted. “Since transitioning to fully online courses, I’ve had students from all over the world. They’re passionate about learning, and they’re taking these courses with a purpose, whether it’s career advancement, a career switch, or personal enrichment.”
One of the key strengths of the Graphic Design Certificate Program is its emphasis on workplace readiness. “Many students are already employed
but want to transition into a design-related role,” Kennedy said.
“We cover not just the software, but also the professional skills needed to succeed in an agency setting or as a freelancer. Understanding client communication, managing projects, and adapting to industry trends are just as important as mastering the tools.”
Beyond professional applications, the program is also beneficial for those pursuing personal projects. “I’ve had students who wanted to start their own Etsy shops or create unique marketing materials for their businesses. It’s amazing to see them take what they’ve learned and turn it into something meaningful.”
Many graphic design students have gone on to secure positions at major companies such as those within the casino industry, working in their design departments. Others have found opportunities in the convention industry, an area where fast-paced and high-quality design work is in constant demand.
“The best part is seeing what they create after they leave the program. Some of them go above and beyond what I imagined. They take the tools I’ve given them and use them to bring their visions to life.”
With passionate instructors like Jessica Kennedy and a curriculum designed to equip students with real-world skills, UNLV’s Graphic Design Certificate Program is an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to expand their expertise and explore new career possibilities in the design industry.
